Rock-crystal chandeliers, Coromandel lacquered screens, gilt Venetian mirrors — it’s décor befitting the purveyor of impeccable taste. Now, Mademoiselle Coco Chanel’s otherworldly abode at 31 Rue Cambon in Paris is illuminating London’s Saatchi Gallery thanks to the photographic exhibition “Second Floor.” Filmmaker and visual artist Sam Taylor-Johnson’s series of 34 images take visitors inside the fashion designer and fine jeweler’s untouched private quarters. Mademoiselle Chanel lived there among treasured possessions such as her crystal balls and gilded lions until her death in 1971. On display until October 4, 2014, the exhibition also inspired an accompanying book, Second Floor, available at the gallery, as well as at other bookstores.
