When Van Cleef & Arpels unveiled the Cadenas watch in 1935, it was considered uncouth for a woman to wear a timepiece in public — hence, why the bracelet-like design featured a dial which only its wearer could see. But now the iconic creation has undergone a 21st-century makeover. An enlarged dial as well as 12-hour markers in fact emphasize the time on the latest edition of the Cadenas, which debuted at Salon International de Haute Horlogerie in Geneva on January 19. Increased readability isn’t the only change, though. The maison also added two ceramic beads inside the clasp for a more secure fastening, and is offering buyers the chance to engrave a personal message on the underside of the updated closure. In all, the Cadenas collection includes nine new, modernized models.
